We were tasked with inspecting the catenary wires on the tower at Pad 39A, Kennedy Space Center. The customer wanted to know the state of the wire, since it was around 15 years old.
We decided to go with a trolley design that would be attached to a tether, and lowered and raised by an electric reel at the top.
After inspecting the top of the lightning mast, we realized that the trolley would have to be installed from the end of a 4ft rod to get it passed some large wire clamps. This complicated the design significantly. All of the locking mechanisms needed to be activated with a hook on the end of the rod.
The company did not have machining capabilities at the time, so I used my personal CNC mill at home to complete the project.
The project was a great success and the customer has awarded us several other projects since.
